Choroid Plexus in Foramina of Luschka

Findings

  • Bilateral linear calcified choroid plexus in the 4th ventricle extending laterally though the foramina of Luschka, more prominent on the right.

Diagnosis

Choroid Plexus in Foramina of Luschka (Mimic)

Discussion

  • This finding has the eponymous name of "Bochdalek's flower basket"

    • The foramina of Luschka are paired foramina located in the lateral recesses of the fourth ventricle that connect the fourth ventricle and the cerebellopontine cistern.

    • Usually choroid is easy to differentiate from hemorrhage given the characteristic location and physiologic calcification.  Using bone windows and measuring point value attenuation may help you confidently identify calcification associated with choroid.

    • Choroid plexus is also found in the atria of the temporal horns of the lateral ventricles, along the posterior medullary velum of the fourth ventricle, and along the roof of the third ventricle.
