Findings
- Massively expanded right internal jugular vein containing thrombus from the level of C1-C2 to the junction of the internal jugular and subclavian veins with surrounding fat stranding
- Inflammatory stranding extends around the right common and internal carotid arteries without luminal stenosis
- No tonsillar/peritonsillar or retropharyngeal abscess
- No evidence of odontogenic or floor of mouth infection
- No enlarged cervical lymph nodes
Diagnosis
Septic thrombophlebitis
Sample Report
Massively expanded right internal jugular vein with intraluminal thrombus extending from C1-C2 through the junction of the internal jugular and subclavian veins. Thrombus is occlusive/near occlusive in several locations. Given surrounding fat stranding, these findings are most consistent with septic thrombophlebitis.
Fat stranding extends around the carotid artery without luminal stenosis.
No additional infectious process identified in the neck, including tonsillar/peritonsillar abscess, retropharyngeal abscess, or odontogenic infection.
No airspace disease or nodules in the visualized portions of the lung apices.
