Findings

  • Irregularity of the bilateral distal radial and ulnar metaphyses
  • Osteopenia with bone-in-bone appearance of the metacarpals

Diagnosis

Rickets

Sample Report

Irregularity of the bilateral distal radial and ulnar metaphyses consistent with rickets.

Osteopenia.

No acute fracture or malalignment.

Discussion

  • Rickets results from hypophosphatemia and may result from prematurity, poor nutrition, malabsorption syndromes, or vitamin D resistance among other causes
  • Common imaging findings:
    • Metaphyseal irregularity/cupping
    • Growth plate widening
    • Tubular bone bowing/fractures
    • Osteopenia
    • Rachitic rosary in the chest (expansion of anterior rib ends at the costochondral junctions)
    • Widening of skull sutures
