Findings
- Acute transverse olecranon fracture with 1.7 cm distraction
- Elbow joint effusion
Diagnosis
Olecranon fracture
Sample Report
Acute transverse olecranon fracture with 1.7 cm distraction.
Radiocapitellar alignment is maintained.
Elbow joint effusion.
Discussion
- The olecranon helps stabilize the elbow, primarily preventing anterior subluxation of the distal humerus
- This particular type of olecranon fracture typically results from axial loading and requires internal fixation if there is substantial distraction (typically > 2 mm or evidence of instability on stress views)
- When describing olecranon fractures, make sure to comment on degree of displacement and comminution. Also make sure to look for associated malalignment
