Demographics: 19 years old, Male
Indication: Elbow injury

Case #2

Findings

Diagnosis

Olecranon fracture

Sample Report

Acute transverse olecranon fracture with 1.7 cm distraction.

Radiocapitellar alignment is maintained.

Elbow joint effusion.

Discussion

  • The olecranon helps stabilize the elbow, primarily preventing anterior subluxation of the distal humerus
  • This particular type of olecranon fracture typically results from axial loading and requires internal fixation if there is substantial distraction (typically > 2 mm or evidence of instability on stress views)
  • When describing olecranon fractures, make sure to comment on degree of displacement and comminution. Also make sure to look for associated malalignment
