Demographics: 63 years old, Male
Indication: Fever, dyspnea

Findings

  • Widening of the superior mediastinum with a rounded lucency overlying the right mediastinal border and a linear lucency extending along the right aspect of the trachea
  • Coarsened interstitial markings with bibasilar patchy airspace opacities
  • Small right pleural effusion with fluid tracking in the minor fissure
  • Remote bilateral rib fractures

Diagnosis

Mediastinititis

Sample Report

Widening of the superior mediastinum with a rounded lucency along the right mediastinal margin, which findings raise particular concern for mediastinitis in the patient presenting with fever. Loculated mediastinal gas may relate to a necrotizing infection and/or communication with the trachea or esophagus. Recommend CT chest for further evaluation.

Patchy bibasilar airspace opacities are concerning for aspiration and/or pneumonia.

Small right pleural effusion.
