Demographics: 38 years old, Female
Indication: Sepsis

Findings

Chest radiograph

  • Multiple bilateral cavitary pulmonary nodular opacities
  • Tunneled right IJ approach dialysis catheter with tip overlying the right atrium

CT

Chest

  • Widespread bilateral peripheral cavitary nodules including a conglomeration of cavitary nodules in the posterior segment of the right upper lobe
  • Groundglass opacities surrounding many of these nodules
  • Widespread interlobular septal thickening
  • Scattered borderline enlarged mediastinal and bilateral hilar lymph nodes, likely reactive
  • Right IJ approach tunneled dialysis catheter with tip in the right atrium
  • Low attenuation of the unenhanced blood pool, suggestive of anemia

Upper abdomen

  • Partially imaged splenomegaly

MSK

  • No acute findings

Diagnosis

Septic embolic disease

Sample Report

Numerous bilateral peripheral cavitary pulmonary nodules for which the primary diagnostic consideration is septic embolic disease.

Groundglass opacities surrounding many of these nodules may represent hemorrhage.

Widespread interlobular septal thickening suggesting an element of interstitial pulmonary edema.
